Everyone wants to party for Fat Tuesday. I see the appeal of Mardi Gras but you also need to understand the mess. The prices are sky high and everything is booked up and crowded.

Literally go a week after and you will see why New Orleans is a great place to visit regardless of the time you go.

You Have Your Choice Of Hotel

Prices drop and rooms open. The city is always busy but never as busy as during Mardi Gras. You can find nice, inexpensive hotels easily.

It Is ALWAYS A Party In NOLA

It in no way means the party has ended. There is never a time that Bourbon street is quiet. You may miss some of the bigger parades but there are always live bands and something to celebrate.

Don’t Miss The Food

You don’t need to be there during Mardi Gras to eat. Want to try King cake? Bakery’s sell it all year. However food is a huge part of New Orleans whether you want to try a Po’boy or head over to Café Du Monde for some beignets you won’t be disappointed. May I suggest heading over to District Donuts in the Garden District they have breakfast food to die for.

Unique Culture

NoLa is full of unique cultural experiences. Each area has its own history and allure. If you want dark history take a ghost tour or a “Ladies of the Night” tour in the French Quarter or check out the beautiful old mansions in the Garden District. The Creole culture and food is not to be missed. New Orleans is a mix of so many things and you need time to explore it all.

Get Out Of The City

With so much to see inside the city it might be tempting not to leave but you should. Check out the bayou and all the wildlife that is in it. Get up close to an alligator (They like hotdogs in case you were wondering). Or check out a plantation and learn about the history of the people who lived there and worked the farms.

Of course you could do all this during Mardi Gras but it seems to me it is less expensive and less of a hassle to go outside of that time period. Enjoy all these things at your leisure and still be able to party!
